Subud Vision - Discussion

Sahlan Diver - A Proposal for an International Subud survey

IRC and Subud democracy article also relevant here. From sabariah van beek, March 24, 2008. Time 14:41

Dear Sahlan,

About 4 years ago there was a committee set up called the International Relations Committee, a kind of free lance group who had ties to WSC and SDI with some of us having been involved for years in the UN. The idea was to identify who Subud people were, and what they wanted to see in Subud.

I wrote a paper on that topic back then. I also suggested we come up with a questionnaire, translations included. WSC actually closed down that committee within a few months, so many and good were the suggestions! I dont even know if the white paper and report were circulated beyond the international board members, who never gave any feedback beyond a "thank you" for your interest and participation.

I feel that this came from the fact that there is a lot of fear within Subud about Subud...

Good to see that you are also interested in that kind of democratic tool and possible synthesis for future action!

Hi Sabariah,

You said "The idea was to identify who Subud people were, and what they wanted to see in Subud.....I wrote a paper on that back then"

Wonderful. I'd be very interested to read what you wrote. I believe other members would be too. When Bapak said "Subud is you, and you are Subud" it raised my hopes that Subud would keep evolving along with the vision of its members. That implies that it's of great value to find out what peoples' current vision/aspiration is.

"I also suggested we come up with a questionnaire"

What do you think of the one that's just gone up on the Subudvision site? How could it be improved?

"WSC actually closed down that committee within a few months... I feel that this came from the fact that there is a lot of fear about Subud in fact within Subud"

This interests me too. What is it that some people fear?
Why specifically do you think the External Relations group was closed down?

I notice that many independent minded members I speak with, and a high proportion of those writing articles for this web site, report seemingly fearful and repressive behaviour from our very own organisation.
This is so bizarre as I don't believe that any individual sets out to be repressive or punitive. I've met this in other organisations too and call it "organisationitis", but I think latihan-lovers experience a disfunctional level of censorship. Subud's credibiliy as an inclusive, dynamic organisation will rocket when we're able to relinquish sacred cows and openly discuss a diversity of members' views.

Stefan
